Almost Here!!!

Our families have started to arrive and we are anxiously awaiting the arrival of the rest of you. The weather is absolutely perfect - a chance of rain on Friday, clearing up again for Saturday. Bring a sweater or fleece, because the evenings are lovely and cool!

Who would have guessed that there is a Radio Shack on Island? They helped us out with the cable to connect an iPod to a stereo - that was the biggest crisis we've had (knocking dutifully on wood)!

Maggie and I are off to get our nails done and then have lunch with our mothers. We enjoyed having a few quiet days before everyone started arriving, and are looking forward to the next few days, spending time with friends and family.

We feel so blessed to have so many dear friends and family with us -- either in spirit or on the Island!

Hurricane Island

So, it appears the Island dodged a bullet and escaped Earl's wrath! Great news for all those getting married Labor Day weekend, and hopefully an omen for good weather for us as well!

We are so thrilled that you will be able to join us for this special time. We've added some information to the "Weekend Activities" section and hope that you will be able to join us at some informal gatherings throughout the weekend. We've also sent this information out by email, but you can also access it here.

The weather should be beautiful this time of year, with highs in the mid 70s and lows in the evening in the low 60s. Bring sunscreen for the days, a sweater for the evenings, and a camera to capture it all! Also, if you haven't done so already, please let us know your cell phone number and where you'll be staying so that we can reach you in case of inclement weather on Saturday.

Finally, for those bringing children, but wanting some quiet grownup time, we recommend Nantucket Babysitters' Service (508-228-4970).

We can't wait to see you! Please let us know if you have any questions or need additional information.

A Quandry for Miss Manners

Miss Manners is quite emphatic about the subject, and I share a similar perspective - that you never ask for gifts in any way! However, Karen and I have been pressed by a number of people to share where we are registered on our blog. I'm not sure Emily Post has caught up with etiquette in the time of blogging!

Truly, your friendship and your support of our shared life together is quite a gift in itself and we would ask for nothing else than this! If, however, you want to know where we are registered, we encourage you to either make a donation to the charity of your choice, or to visit our wish list on Amazon.

Book your Ferry Reservations!

If you're planning on bringing your car on island, book your reservations as soon as possible! Remember, you likely will not need a car once you're on the island, and there are plenty of safe Steamship Authority parking lots near the ferry terminal in Hyannis. Also, it's about $450 for a roundtrip car ferry reservation for the car plus two adults. . . . however, if you want the flexibility of having your car and you're schlepping a lot of sunblock, beach paraphernalia, and the like, then it may make sense.

It also makes sense to book your own passenger ferry reservations as well -- there are a number of ferry options (fast or slow ferry; Steamship Authority or Hyline) -- and these reservations are easier to come by (and much much less expensive!!)

Maggie & I are just back from a busy but successful couple of days making arrangements for the wedding. As we were waiting for the ferry to leave the harbor, we realized that it was 3 months to the day before the wedding. We are so excited about sharing time with you soon.

We are very close to making final decisions about catering, flowers, and cake. We also spent time scoping out the Brant Point Light and making decisions about the actual ceremony. We've also begun compiling a series of recommended activities for our guests to participate over the weekend. We'll post more details later, but here are a few highlights:
  • The weather was perfect, and likely very similar to what the weather will be like in September. It was comfortably warm during the day (65-75 degrees) and pleasantly chilly in the evening (just right for a sweater or jacket).
  • The Nantucket Regional Transportation Authority shuttle will operate through September. The shuttle routes will allow easy access to most parts of the island. This was one of our most exciting discoveries because it provides a viable option to explore the island for those who aren't comfortable walking or biking.
  • We discovered a new bike rental company, Easy Riders, that provides free delivery and pick-up anywhere on the island. Their rates are also a little less than the companies operating near the wharf and the pick-up/delivery is a great service.
  • Any knitters out there? Sheep to Shore is a great little shop in the Surfside area. Take classes, pick up a Nantucket sweater pattern, or just cruise for interesting yarn.
  • We're sending a shout-out to our friend David at 76 Main. 76 Main is a beautiful B&B just a couple of blocks from town. We've enjoyed staying there our last 2 times on island. If you're still looking for a place to stay, give David a call.
  • A Nantucket Doughnut Run: The Downyflake.
  • Nantucket Bookworks is a terrific independent bookseller. They are open until 10:30p so it's a great place to spend some after dinner time. Obviously they have a great selection of books but they also have lots of other quirky items.
  • Plymouth & Brockton offers bus service from Logan Airport to Hyannis. This is a great option for those of you who will be flying into Boston.
Make sure you book your reservations soon. Please let us know if you have any questions about the Island. We can't wait to see you all there!!!

Book early!

Although the Island quiets down considerably after Labor Day, there are still quite a number of visitors, and there will be two other weddings on September 18th, so we encourage you to book your rooms early!
